Our Values.

Every coffee leaving Lars & Margo has been the cumulative result of minds and people connecting together across land and sea, with knowledge shared and a commitment to work together. We are proud to be part of this linkage.

Since our launch in 2020 we chose to prevent single use plastics being used at Lars &  Margo. Our signature black bags are made from Japanese recycled paper and are carbon neutral - they do not contain aluminium. All other packaging that we use when posting our coffee is home compostable including the postcard made from recycled paper, to the cardboard carton.

Due to a demand in ‘ordering more to reduce costs’ we are finding we are ordering more labels than we need - SO - we are launching the nøgen range of coffees which are being sent label free. We love our branding but at the end of each batch of coffee we are ending up with an excess of labels. This is neither good for our profits but more importantly, good for the planet, taking unnecessary resources. We hope this will be a successful decision and appreciate the support of our customers on this.

Lars & Margo import by sea - one day a small percentage of this may be by sail. UK nationwide deliveries are by land. Most B2B deliveries are within the county of Cornwall using our own petrol small car or sending by Parcelforce or DPD.

We practice sustainable sourcing by openly working closely with experienced merchants and contacts overseas. Our goal is to meet farmers in person as our relationships strengthen and we grow together. Mandy is also about to embark on her Masters degree through the University of Sussex - Sustainable Development MSc where she will explore and research the complexities of running a business today - to benefit the future.

Lars & Margo have almost zero waste. Small batch roasting ensures fresh roasts and small quantities means there is never any waste. The chaff collected provides nitrogen for composting. The sacks are sold or made into carbon reducing products.

We value creativity, not only in the production and roasting of the beans but equally from others. We support makers, making objects that have a purpose - giving them a visual platform to reach a further audience.

While our coffee may be small in scale, its impact is anything but. Bursting with incredible flavour and unparalleled quality, our coffee delights the senses and leaves a lasting impression.

Monday 26th February 2024 ‘officially’ sees us raising funds through sales of our #00B Brazilian coffee to Cancer Research UK through Work for Good. We have seen customers, friends and family affected by cancer and we feel the need to support a charity closer to home that many can directly relate. The pink ribbon on our labels is a recognisable symbol for breast cancer awareness but funds are going to Cancer Research UK.

From 1st March 2024, in collaboration with Project Waterfall, Lars & Margo shall support clean water projects in coffee growing communities around the world. Coffee is a water-intensive crop with a large water footprint. Up to 840L of water is needed to make one 750ml pot of coffee. That’s more than tea, sugar, wheat, and barley. While we enjoy the purest filtered water in our coffee, the communities at the end of its supply chain face a water crisis. This is why we wanted to collaborate with Project Waterfall with its mission to unite the coffee industry and coffee consumers, to give back to the communities growing our coffee by investing in sustainable clean water, sanitation and hygiene projects.

At Lars & Margo, your coffee experience is important to us and we look forward to sharing our passion for exceptional coffee with you every step of the way.

  • We are encouraged and take great pride in helping our customers find a coffee that they really savour. Offering only arabica beans as both single origin and blends, we also offer a bespoke service where we can create a roast just for you. We ensure excellence and taste through our small batch roasting method as well as quality control.

  • Cornwall with its open moors and rugged coastline offers nothing but inspiration and a desire to protect. As a result we value the need to nurture the environment we live and work in and that which we source from.

Since 2020, Lars & Margo has championed the reduction of single-use plastics. Our bags, made from recycled Japanese paper and aluminium free (to helps to minimise our CO2 footprint) and all our packaging, including postcards and cardboard cartons, is designed for home composting. Wood shavings and fabric pieces can be repurposed or recycled.

We also promote the idea of visitors to our roastery refilling their coffee supplies to reduce waste and packaging. At our roastery, they have the opportunity to replenish their stocks with the freshest coffee roasts, ground to their preferred specifications right before them! Explore further details about our coffee refill system.

For imports, we primarily employ sea transport, with a future plan for sail transport. UK deliveries are land-based, and most B2B deliveries occur within Cornwall, where we partner with an electric van-haulage firm to support our net-zero emissions goal.

Lars & Margo is committed to minimal waste. Small-batch roasting guarantees freshness without unnecessary waste. Chaff from the roasting process contributes nitrogen to composting, and we sell or repurpose coffee sacks, furthering our carbon reduction efforts. Our dedication to sustainability underlies our every operation.

  • We are a small team, alongside Genevieve our 5kg roaster, named after the vintage 1904 Darracq motor car from the film of the same name.

We roast in small batches enabling care and attention that our coffee and more importantly you deserve. Our coffee is prepared in a small way in every aspect, but is large in flavour and quality.

Due to our success we are now making plans to purchase our next roaster to join us in spring 2024 - roasting on a larger machine will allow more efficiency on the fuel we consume, allowing us to reduce our roasting carbon emissions and assist our time management.

  • We recognise that great coffee begins on the land of the farmers. We look for farmers who practice organically - not necessarily who can afford certification. We look for farmers caring for their communities and their environment. We look for farmers who support health, welfare and education. We support farmers who believe in gender equality. In order for much of this to happen - we believe in the farmers receiving a fair price for their coffee beans.

We also look for building enduring relationships.

  • If you’re passing through, live close by or in the area you can visit the roastery and get your weekly top up of coffee. Simply bring your chosen container and we will help you reduce your spending, save waste and likewise protect the planet!
